STANISLAUS I LESZCZYŃSKI, King of Poland. — Born 20 Oct. 1677 at Lviv, died 23 Feb. 1766 at Lunéville.
With the direct support of Charles XII of Sweden he was crowned King of Poland in 1705, but after the battle of Poltava he was obliged to leave the throne, which was reoccupied by Augustus II the Strong, Elector of Saxony. He settled in France at the court of Louis XV, who had married his only daughter Maria. At the death of Augustus II he was again elected king, this time with French backing, but Austria and Russia forced him by arms to abandon Poland once more. This occurred following the preliminaries of Vienna in 1735, at the end of the so-called War of the Polish Succession, in compensation for which he received the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar, which upon his death passed to France.
