STANISLAO I Leszczynski, king of POLAND. — Born on 20 October 1677 in Leopoli, died on 23 February 1766 in Lunéville.
With the direct support of Charles XII of Sweden, he was crowned king of Poland in 1705, but after the battle of Poltava he had to leave the throne, which was reoccupied by Augustus II the Strong, elector of Saxony. He settled in France with Louis XV, who had married his only daughter, Maria. Upon the death of Augustus II he was elected king once again, this time with French support, but Austria and Russia forced him by arms to abandon Poland once more. S., following the preliminaries of Vienna in 1735, at the end of the so-called War of the Polish Succession, received the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar in compensation; upon his death, they passed to France.
