STANISŁAW I LESZCZYŃSKI, King of Poland. - B. 20 Oct. 1677 at Lwów, d. 23 Feb. 1766 at Lunéville.

With the direct support of Charles XII of Sweden he was crowned king of Poland in 1705, but after the battle of Poltava he had to leave the throne, which was reoccupied by Augustus II the Strong, elector of Saxony. He settled in France at the court of Louis XV, who had married his only daughter Maria. On the death of Augustus II he was again elected king, this time with French support, but Austria and Russia forced him by arms to abandon Poland once more. S., following the preliminaries of Vienna of 1735, at the end of the so-called War of the Polish Succession, obtained in compensation the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar, which on his death passed to France.
