STEFANO [II]

STEPHEN [II]. - A Roman presbyter elected upon the death of Zachary, between March 16 and 23, 752, but who died four days later, before the consecratio, which was then required in order to be considered pope.

In fact the Lib. Pont. (I, p. 440), which for this period is a contemporary source, and the most ancient catalogues do not consider him as such; nevertheless, some still consider him a true pope, thereby increasing by one unit the ordinal number of the popes of the same name. Since historically and juridically S. cannot be considered a pope, he has been expunged from our chronotaxis (v. PAPA).
