SUPERIOREN-VEREINIGUNG. – Association of the Major Superiors (abbots and provincials) of the Orders and clerical Congregations of Germany whose members worked either in mission territories or among Germans who had emigrated abroad.
It was founded in 1898 at Krefeld under the name Superioren-Konferenz (Conference of Superiors). Its founders were the seven religious Congregations that had missions in the German colonies. It was later enlarged through the admission of all the other missionary institutes and changed its name to S.-V. (“Union of Superiors”). The general secretary, charged with safeguarding the interests of the missionary institutes before the ecclesiastical and civil authorities, has been based in Berlin since 1923.
