SUPERIOREN-VEREINIGUNG. - Association of the major superiors (abbots and provincials) of the clerical Orders and Congregations of Germany whose members worked either in the mission territories or among German emigrants abroad.
It was founded in 1898 at Krefeld under the name Superioren-Konferenz (Conference of Superiors). Its founders were the seven religious Congregations that had missions in the German colonies. Later it was enlarged by the admission of all the other missionary institutes and changed its name to that of S.-V. ("Union of Superiors"). The secretary general, charged with looking after the interests of the missionary institutes before the ecclesiastical and civil authorities, has been in Berlin since 1923.
