TERRIEN, JEAN-BAPTISTE. - Jesuit, theologian, b. at St. Laurent-des-Autels (Maine-et-Loire) on 26 Aug. 1832, d. at Bellevue (Paris) on 5 Dec. 1903.

Having entered the Order on 7 Dec. 1854, he taught philosophy for 2 years, then dogmatic theology for 22 years in the scholasticates of Laval (1864-80) and of Jersey (1880-88); then for 3 years (1892-94) at the Catholic Institute of Paris, where he afterwards remained until his death, as spiritual director and writer.

Besides the treatises on theology for the use of students, which show him to be a more positive than scholastic theologian, he published: S. Thomae Aquinatis doctrina sincera de Unione hypostatica (Paris 1864); of devotional popularization, founded on theology, there remain still well received and studied: La dévotion au S. Coeur de Jésus d'après les documents authentiques et la théologie (ibid. 1893; Italian trans. Naples 1895) and above all: La grâce et la gloire ou la filiation adoptive des enfants de Dieu (2 vols., Paris 1897); La Mère de Dieu et la Mère des hommes d'après les Pères et la théologie (4 vols., ibid. 1900-1902), all works of high value for the precision and abundance of their doctrine.
