THERIN-BONESIO, LUDOVICO. - Capuchin theologian, b. at Torino on 27 Aug. 1705, entered the Order on 22 Sept. 1720, d. at Bobbio on 28 July 1780. He was general secretary (1740), provincial (1746), definitor, procurator, and postulator of the Order (1747-1761).
As postulator, he worked zealously for the cause of s. Veronica Giuliani. Elected bishop of Bobbio, in 1766 he realized the need for a uniform popular catechism for all the parishes of the diocese and, taking inspiration from Bossuet’s Catéchisme du diocèse de Meaux (1687), wrote a Compendio della dottrina cristiana (Cremona n.d.), highly praised and published several times; it influenced the Catechismo ad uso di tutte le chiese del Regno d'Italia promulgated at Milano in 1807 by card. G. Caprara on the order of the viceroy Eugenio Napoleone.
