HUMILITY (Humilitas), Saint. - Abbess, who spread the order of the Vallombrosans, b. at Faenza in 1226 or 1227 and d. at Florence on 22 May 1310.

Married to Ugolotto Caccianemici; after some years of marriage, she and her husband entered, respectively, among the Canons and Canonesses of St. Perpetua at Faenza. After 2 years H. shut herself up for another 12 in a cell near the church of St. Apollinaris of the Vallombrosans. Then, with the help of the abbot general Plebano, she founded (ca. 1265) and governed the monastery of St. Maria Novella della Malta near Faenza, into which she introduced the rule of Vallombrosa, and the other (1282) of St. John the Evangelist at Florence.

She had the gift of reading without having studied and dictated, in Latin, the Laudes B. M. V., also translated into Italian, the De curia paradisi, in honor of her two guardian angels, and on St. John the Evangelist two Sermones (edited by Torello Sala, Florence 1884). Her cult was confirmed by Clement XI on 27 Jan. 1720. Her relics are preserved at St. Spirito of Varlungo. Feast on 22 May.
