Thomas, Charles-Louis

THOMAS, CHARLES-LOUIS. - Musician, b. in Metz on 5 Aug. 1811, d. in Paris on 12 Febr. 1896.

Having entered the Paris Conservatory of Music in 1828, after one year he obtained the first Grand Prize for piano and after three the Grand Prize of Rome. From then until the whole of France, and in 1871 to Auber, the directorship of the Paris Conservatory. Besides the many theatrical works, he also has to his credit not only fine choruses and good chamber music, but also excellent sacred music, Requiem, solemn mass, motets, etc.
