Having completed his studies at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome, he was immediately called to teach theory, history, and Gregorian palaeography there. He wrote numerous articles for the *Bollettino Ceciliano*, *Ephemerides liturgicae*, *Ambrosius*, *La vie bénédictine* of Ligugé, and *Cecilia* of Boston; he directed and left various transcriptions of Gregorian and post-Gregorian pieces; he was also an active collaborator of the *Enciclopedia Cattolica* for entries on Gregorian chant.
For years he had been preparing a critical edition of unpublished medieval musical treatises and published studies on modality and rhythm, practical interpretation, and palaeographic exegesis of Gregorian chant. He enriched the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music with a significant collection of microfilms reproducing hundreds of Gregorian and polyphonic codices from various European libraries. A special place is deserved by his monographic study *Le chant et les chantres dans les monastères bénédictins antérieurs au XVe siècle*, published in the *Mélanges* of 1947, edited by the abbey of St Jerome.
