VINCENZO UGOLINI – Musician. Born in Perugia c. 1570; died in Rome on 6 May 1638.
Having gone to Rome at a very young age, he studied with Nanino. He served as maestro di cappella at S. Maria Maggiore (1592–1603), at the cathedral of Benevento (1619–25), in Rome at S. Luigi dei Francesi (1616–20), then at the Cappella Giulia in St Peter’s (1620–26); and again at S. Luigi dei Francesi (1633–38). He published much sacred music: Motets for 8 voices (Rome 1644); 4 books of motets for 1–4 voices with figured bass for organ (ibid. 1616–19); 2 volumes of Psalms for 8 voices (Venice 1620); 2 books of Masses in motet style for 8 and 12 voices (Rome 1623); Psalms and motets for 12 voices (Venice 1624); Psalmi ad Vesperas (ibid. 1628). These works are of definite worth and recall the manner of Palestrina, of whom Ugolini was one of the best followers.
