TIERRADENTRO, PREFETTURA APOSTOLICA DI

TIERRADENTRO, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. - It is located in the center of the Cordillera of Colombia, at a great altitude.

It was erected on 13 May 1921 with territory detached from the archdiocese of Popayán and is entrusted to the Lazarists, who had begun missionary work there as early as 1905. It has an area of 2,000 sq. km. and a population of about 36,000 inhabitants, all Catholics, with the exception of very few Protestants. Missionaries 5, sisters 16, catechists 53, quasi-parishes 3, primary stations 2, secondary stations 22, churches 20, elementary schools 45, dispensaries 4.
