TIEPOLO, LORENZO BALDISSERA - Lorenzo T. portrays his mother Cecilia Guardi, his brother the priest Giuseppe Maria and his three sisters - London, Rosebery Collection.
TIEPOLO, LORENZO BALDISSERA. - Painter, b. 1 Aug. 1736 in Venice, d. shortly before 8 Aug. 1776 in Madrid; son of G. Battista.
He followed his father to Würzburg and to Spain. He is mentioned in 1761 in the book Della Fragilia pittorica di Venezia. He painted a ceiling in the Royal Palace of Madrid in 1768, then numerous portraits of the Royal Family. From 1774 he had lengthy disputes over payments for pastel works executed for the Royal Family.
Few works by L. are known to us: a signed drawing in the Rasini collection in Milan; a small portrait of Carlo Goldoni that served for an engraving, at the Albertina in Vienna; the signed engravings of his father's works. Probably works of his are also: a pastel portrait, said to be of his wife, but more probably of his mother, at Ca' Rezzonico; a drawing with three heads in the Malaspina Museum in Pavia; the painting with the T. family in the Rosebery collection in London; a preparatory drawing for the figure of the painter in the aforementioned painting, in a private collection in Milan. Other attributions made previously carry little weight; and therefore the pictorial figure of L., which is nonetheless to be recognized, from the engravings and from these few drawings and paintings, as of a certain importance, still remains to be clarified. - See plates IX-X.
