TIRANA. - Capital of the Albanian State, arisen around 1600 through the work of the Turks, situated to the E. of Durazzo and to the NE. of Elbassan, on the course of the river Ishmi (Drin).

The city is at the center of an important network of roads radiating outward, natural and artificial, which connect it to Durazzo, Scutari, Valona and to all the other important centers of Albania; by air it is connected with Brindisi, Salonico and Scutari. At 120 m. above sea level, T. has a notably mild climate, especially if compared with that of the other Albanian centers. Its inhabitants (31,286 in the capital) among Muslims (60%), Orthodox (20%) and Catholics (10%), number 59,160 (in the prefecture), according to the census of 1941. The programs of public works that were supposed to renew T. were carried out particularly after the end of the Second World War, when Albania regained its formal independence. V. entry ALBANIA.
