TOSATTI, MARIA BARBARA. - Poet, b. 4 Nov. 1891 at S. Felice sul Panaro (Modena), d. in Rome 17 Apr. 1934.
A woman of exquisite intelligence, of solid classical culture, of profound spirituality. Her brother Quinto published a volume of her work entitled Canti e preghiere (Brescia 1939), and it contains lyrics, thoughts and letters of M. B. It was a sudden leap into notoriety.
The recognition of her lofty poetic vein was unanimous; for, although it had recourse to nineteenth-century meters, it succeeded in commanding everyone's admiration through the candid lyricism of its inspiration, the refined beauty of its expression, which distantly brought to mind the names of Foscolo and Leopardi, and through the inner spiritual richness from which it sprang.
