REUS, Johann Baptist. – Mystic, born 10 July 1868 at Pottenstein, diocese of Bamberg, of peasant stock; died at São Leopoldo on 21 July 1947.
Having entered his diocesan seminary, he was ordained priest in 1893. Two years later he entered the novitiate of the German Jesuits in the Netherlands. In 1900 he set out for the Brazilian mission of Rio Grande do Sul, where he taught classical languages, liturgy and served as spiritual director.
He left a *Curso de liturgia sistemático*, widely circulated throughout Latin America. Testimonies from those who knew him, but above all a *Diario* and a *Biografia*, written at the order of his superiors, have added to his reputation for holiness that of a man endowed with continual and extraordinary mystical and paranormal gifts. His tomb in São Leopoldo continues to draw ever more numerous pilgrims from every country of South America.
