REUS, JOHANN BAPTIST. - Mystic, b. July 10, 1868 at Pottenstein, diocese of Bamberg, to a family of peasants; d. at São Leopoldo on July 21, 1947.

Having entered his diocesan seminary, he left it a priest in 1893. Two years later he entered the novitiate of the German Jesuits in Holland. In 1900 he set out for the Brazilian mission of Rio Grande do Sul, where he was a professor of classical languages and of liturgy and a spiritual director.

He left a Curso de liturgia sistematico, very widely circulated throughout Latin America. The testimonies of those who knew him, but above all a Diario and a Biografia, written by order of his superiors, added to the fame of his sanctity that of a man endowed with continual and extraordinary mystical and paramystical gifts. His tomb is attracting to São Leopoldo ever more numerous pilgrimages from all the countries of South America.
