REUS, JOHANN BAPTIST. – Mystic, born on 10 July 1868 at Pottenstein, in the diocese of Bamberg, into a peasant family; died at São Leopoldo on 21 July 1947.
He entered his diocesan seminary and was ordained a priest in 1893. Two years later he entered the novitiate of the German Jesuits in Holland. In 1900 he departed for the Brazilian mission of Rio Grande do Sul, where he was professor of classical languages and liturgy, as well as spiritual director.
He left a Curso de liturgia sistematico, which became extremely widespread throughout Latin America. The testimonies of those who knew him, but above all a Diario and a Biografia, written at the order of his superiors, added to his reputation for holiness that of a man endowed with continual and extraordinary mystical and paramystical gifts. His tomb is attracting to São Leopoldo ever more numerous pilgrimages from all the countries of South America.
