TULANCINGO, DIOCESE of. – City and diocese in the State of Hidalgo (Mexico).
It extends over an area of 20,000 sq. km, with a population of 641,800 inhabitants, of whom 636,000 are Catholics; it has 56 parishes served by 83 diocesan priests and 2 religious priests; it has 2 male and 17 female religious communities (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 436).
The first to preach the Gospel in that State were the Franciscans in the 16th century, who founded there a convent directed by Fr. Juan Padilla. The Augustinians also worked extensively in those regions. Pope Pius IX elevated the city of T. to a diocese on 22 January 1862, as a suffragan of the archdiocese of Mexico, forming it with 38 parishes from Mexico and 16 from the diocese of Puebla.
