TULANCINGO, Diocese of. - City and diocese in the State of Hidalgo (Mexico).

It extends over an area of 20,000 sq km, with a population of 641,800 inhabitants, of whom 636,000 are Catholics; it has 56 parishes served by 83 diocesan priests and 2 regulars; it has 2 male religious communities and 17 female ones (Ann. Pont. 1953, p. 436).

The first to preach the Gospel in that State were, in the 16th century, the Franciscans, who founded there a convent governed by Fr. Juan Padilla. The Augustinians also worked a great deal in those regions. Pope Pius IX elevated the city of T. to a diocese on 22 Jan. 1862, as a suffragan of the archdiocese of Mexico, forming it from 38 parishes of Mexico and 16 of the diocese of Puebla.
