WARSAW, ARCHDIOCESE of - Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw, removed and interned by the communist Government of Poland, on 26 Sept. 1953.

At Rostków near Przasnysz St. Stanisław Kostka (v.) was born, and near Warsaw Father Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941), who died heroically in the concentration camp of Oświęcim; in 1927-28 the latter founded the City of the Immaculate (Niepokalanów), repeating his foundation in Japan in 1930-36. His beatification process is under way.

Pope Pius XI, by apostolic letter of 23 Aug. 1923, raised to the title and dignity of Minor Basilica the new church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, situated in the suburb of the city (AAS, 15 [1923], pp. 583-84). For the history and art: v. also POLONIA. - See: plate XCIV.
