VARSAVIA, ARCHDIOCESE of - Cardinal Stefano Wyszyński, archbishop of Gnesna and V., was removed from office and interned by the Communist Government of Poland on 26 Sept. 1953.
At Rostków near Przasnysz St. Stanisław Kostka (v.) was born, and near V. Fr. Massimiliano Kolb (1894-1941), who died heroically in the concentration camp of Oświęcim; in 1927-28 he founded the City of the Immaculate (Niepokalanów), repeating this foundation in Japan in 1930-36. His process of beatification is in progress.
Pope Pio XI, by Apostolic Letter of 23 Aug. 1923, raised the new church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, situated in the suburb of the city, to the rank and dignity of a minor Basilica (AAS, 15 [1923], pp. 583-84). For history and art: V. anch. POLONIA. - Vedi: pl. XCIV.
