VINTIMILLE DU LUC, CHARLES. - Archbishop of Paris, b. 15 Nov. 1655 at Luc (Fréjus), d. in Paris on 13 March 1746.
Bishop of Marseille from 21 Jan. 1692, then archbishop of Aix (14 May 1708), where he distinguished himself by his spirit of sacrifice during a plague, he succeeded Card. de Noailles in the Paris see (17 Aug. 1729). Zealous and of moderate tendency, from his very first pastoral letter he exhorted everyone to submit to the bull Unigenitus, and he disapproved of the appellants. He condemned the Nouvelles ecclésiastiques, a Jansenist review, for which he stirred up against himself the opposition of the Paris parliament. Against the manifestations of the convulsionaries at the tomb of the deacon Paris (v.) he succeeded in obtaining the closure of the cemetery of St. Médard (1732) and declared the supposed miracles illusory (v. CONVULSIONARI DI S. MEDARDO).
