ZAMOMETIC, ANDREA. - Dominican bishop, of Slavic origin, b. in 1420, d. at Basilea on 12 Nov. 1484.
Having entered the Dominicans at Udine when young, he studied and taught at Padova, where he formed friendships with Francesco della Rovere. When the latter became Pope, Z. was appointed by him archbishop of Craina in Tessaglia on 10 January 1476. For three years he was ambassador of Emperor Federico III to the Roman Curia. Because of his bitter criticisms of the Pontiff’s nepotism and of the morals of the court, on 14 June 1481 he was imprisoned and then, once released, went to Germany, where he passed himself off as a cardinal and set about promoting at Basilea a general council of reform, whose
imminent opening he proclaimed on 25 March 1482 in the cathedral of Basilea, inviting the Christian princes and hoping for the support of the opponents of papal policy in Italy. In order to get him into his hands, Sisto IV on 2 July 1482 ordered that he be imprisoned, and on 4 Sept. he was already deprived of the archbishopric, while Basilea was placed under interdict for having given him refuge. Imprisoned on 21 Dec. 1482, he was found strangled without having submitted.
