ZAMOMETIC, ANDREA. — Dominican bishop, of Slavic origin, b. 1420, d. at Basel on 12 Nov. 1484.
He entered the Dominican Order at Udine while still young, studied and taught at Padua, and there formed a friendship with Francesco della Rovere. When the latter became Pope, Z. was named by him Archbishop of Crainia in Thessaly on 10 Jan. 1476. For three years he served as ambassador of Emperor Frederick III at the Roman Curia. Because of his sharp criticism of the Pope’s nepotism and the morals of the papal court, on 14 June 1481 he was imprisoned; after his release he went to Germany, where he posed as a cardinal and set about promoting a general council of reform at Basel.
