ZAMET, SÉBASTIEN. - Bishop, b. in Paris in 1588 to the financier Sebastiano, d. at Mussy on 2 February 1655.

Chaplain to Queen Marie de' Medici, on 6 April 1615 he was elected bishop of Langres and immediately worked in the Assembly of the Clergy so that the observance of the reform canons of the Council of Trent should finally be imposed in France, and in his diocese he set an example of this through preaching, assistance at confessions and attention to the reform of women religious. He soon became a member of the Company of the Most Blessed Sacrament (v.) and was a friend of St. Vincent de Paul and of the most deserving reformers of his age.

From 1626 in Paris he was for some time the spiritual director of Angélique Arnaud, whom in 1633 she entrusted to his friend the abbot of Saint-Cyran (v.). When the latter began to spread Jansenist doctrine and spirit, especially with regard to Confession, he refuted him with two writings, one of which he had delivered to Card. Richelieu, whereupon the latter proceeded to arrest the famous abbot.
