ZAMBONI, GIUSEPPE. - Neo-Scholastic philosopher, born in Verona on 2 Aug. 1875 and died in Boscochiesanuova (Verona) on 8 Aug. 1950.
After a brilliant apologetic activity against positivist materialism, when called to the Catholic University of Milan in 1925, he devoted himself to philosophical problems with a particular methodological approach which he called the “gnoseology of act,” consisting principally in the analysis of immediate ontological contents (notions of being, substance, cause) as they are given in the experience of the self, and in the extension of these contents to the sphere of the external world and to the problems of moral life. Z.’s work, rich in interesting analyses, reveals the presence of multiple influences (Kant, Rosmini, Mercier), which he intended to fuse into a linear synthesis in which ontology would appear, through ascending stages, rooted in an evidence of immediate transparency by virtue of the reality of the act that underlies it from time to time.
