VITALIANO, PAPA, saint. — Little is known about the activity of Pope V. (30 July 657–27 June 672).
It is known only that he maintained good relations with the court of Constantinople, that Constans II confirmed his election without difficulty and had his name entered in the diptychs. On 5 July 663 V. gave the sovereign a magnificent welcome. But the Lib. Pontif. bitterly records the plundering of which several churches in Rome were victims. It should also be noted that Constans II gravely infringed upon the privileges of the Holy See by removing the see of Ravenna from its jurisdiction (19 March 666). He is included in the Roman Martyrology; feast day, 27 January.
