WANKIE [HWANGE], APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. - It is located in Southern Rhodesia and was erected on June 29, 1953.

In 1949 some fathers of the Spanish Institute of St. Francis Xavier for the Foreign Missions of Burgos went to the apostolic vicariate of Bulawayo (v.) to begin apostolic work in the district of W. The new apostolic prefecture comprises the civil districts of W. and Sebungwe and that part of the district of Shangani which lies between the Shangani and Kana rivers and borders to the north along the Zambezi River with the apostolic vicariate of Livingstone, to the east with the apostolic vicariate of Salisbury and of Fort Victoria, to the north and west with the apostolic vicariate of Bulawayo.

The new prefecture has an area of about 50,000 sq km with about 115,000 inhabitants, of whom Catholics number about 2,700 and catechumens about 280. There are 8 priests, 2 brothers, 4 sisters.
