WANKIE, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. - It is situated in Southern Rhodesia and was erected on 29 June 1953.
In 1949 some fathers of the Spanish Institute of St Francis Xavier for Foreign Missions of Burgos went Bulawayo (v.) in order to begin apostolic work in the district of W. The new apostolic prefecture comprises the civil districts of W. and Sebungwe and that part of the district of Shangani which lies between the Shangani and Kana rivers and borders to the north, along the Zambezi River, on the apostolic vicariate of Livingstone, to the east on
the apostolic vicariate of Salisbury and Fort Victoria, and to the north and west on the apostolic vicariate of Bulawayo.
The new prefecture has an area of approximately 50,000 sq. km., with approximately 115,000 inhabitants, of whom about 2,700 are Catholics and about 280 catechumens. There are 8 priests, 2 brothers, and 4 sisters.
