In 1949 some fathers of the Spanish Institute of St Francis Xavier for Foreign Missions of Burgos went to the Apostolic Vicariate of Bulawayo (q.v.) to begin apostolic work in the district of Wankie. The new Apostolic Prefecture comprises the civil districts of Wankie and Sebungwe and that part of the Shanganì district which lies between the Shanganì and Kana rivers and borders to the north along the Zambesi river with the Apostolic Vicariate of Livingstone, and to the east with the Apostolic Vicariate of Buta.
The new Prefecture has an area of about 50,000 sq. km. with about 115,000 inhabitants, of whom about 2,700 are Catholics and about 280 catechumens. There are 8 priests, 2 brothers, and 4 sisters.
