LIVINGSTONE, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE of. - In Northern Rhodesia. Its territory (the province of Barotseland with the district of L., which properly belongs to Southern Rhodesia) was detached from the apostolic prefecture of Broken-Hill, erected as an apostolic prefecture under the name of Victoria Falls on 30 May 1936, and elevated on 10 March 1950 to the apostolic vicariate of L., to which the district of the eastern Caprivi Strip was added.
It is entrusted to the Irish Capuchins. Over an area of 202,000 sq. km., it has 358,000 inhabitants, of whom 3,248 are Catholics and 5,904 catechumens, distributed among 8 parishes with 14 churches, served by 20 regular priests and 1 secular priest; it has 6 communities of women religious; 1 boys’ educational institution and 1 girls’ institution; 10 charitable institutions, including 1 leprosarium (Annuario Pontificio, 1951, p. 678). Important measures concerning education have recently been adopted, which constitutes the fundamental problem of the vicariate even more than elsewhere, given its location as an important and continuously developing centre.
