LIVINGSTONE, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE OF. — In Northern Rhodesia. Its territory (the province of Barotseland with the district of L., which properly belongs to Southern Rhodesia) was detached from the Apostolic Prefecture of Broken-Hill, erected as an Apostolic Prefecture under the name of Victoria Falls on 30 May 1936, and elevated on 10 March 1950 to the Apostolic Vicariate of L., to which the district of the Eastern Caprivi Strip was added.
It is entrusted to the Irish Capuchins. Over an area of 202,000 sq. km., it has 358,000 inhabitants, of whom 248 are Catholics and 5,904 catechumens, distributed in 8 parishes with 14 churches, served by 20 regular priests and 1 secular priest; it has 6 female religious communities; 1 male and 1 female educational institute; 10 charitable institutions, including 1 leper asylum (Annuario Pontificio, 1951, p. 678). Recently important measures have been adopted regarding education, which constitutes the fundamental problem of the vicariate more than elsewhere, given its location as an important centre in continuous development.
