WARTENBERG, FRANZ WILHELM, Count of. - Cardinal, b. 1 March 1593 in Munich, d. 1 Dec. 1661 in Regensburg.

Son of Duke Ferdinand of Bavaria and Maria von Pettenbeck, he studied with the Jesuits at Ingolstadt and at the Germanicum in Rome. Bishop of Osnabrück in 1625, he vigorously promoted the Catholic Reform and, as imperial commissioner, enforced the Edict of Restitution in the territories around the Elbe. Also bishop of Verden and Minden in 1630 and 1632, he was obliged to leave Osnabrück following the Swedish occupation, from 1633 to 1648. In 1636 he became coadjutor, with right of succession, to the bishop of Regensburg, whom he succeeded in 1650. In that year he also recovered the bishopric of Osnabrück. He was created cardinal by Alexander VII on 5 Apr. 1660.
