XAVIERRE, GIROLAMO. - Master General of the Friars Preachers, cardinal, b. about 1546 at Saragozza, d. 2 Sept. 1608 at Valladolid, buried in the convent of Saragozza.
He taught for 14 years at the studium of Saragozza. He gained renown as a preacher throughout Spain. At the General Chapter of Rome he was elected (6 Aug. 1601) Master General of the Order. He chose excellent collaborators (the Venerable Marco di Marconisse as procurator general), decreed that in all the provinces there should be one or more convents of regular observance; he took an interest in the history of the Order, presided over the General Chapter of Valladolid in 1605, leaving in Rome (where he never returned) Fr. Patella as vicar general. He became confessor to Filippo III and, at the King's proposal, was created cardinal by Paolo V in 1607, thereby relinquishing the office of general.
