He taught for 14 years in the studium of Saragossa. He enjoyed a reputation as a preacher throughout Spain. At the General Chapter of Rome he was elected (6 August 1601) Master General of the Order. He chose excellent collaborators (as procurator general the venerable Marco di Marconisse), decreed that in all the provinces there should be one or more convents of regular observance; he took an interest in the history of the Order, presided over the General Chapter of Valladolid in 1605, leaving in Rome (where he never returned) as vicar general Father Patella. He became confessor of Philip III, on the King's proposal, and by Paul V was created cardinal in 1607, thus relinquishing the office of general.
