TORMOLI, AMBROCINO. - Dominican, glass painter, born at Soncino before 1450, died at Bologna in 1527.
He entered the Dominicans at Bologna as a lay brother and, under Bl. Giacomo Griesinger, called Alamanno or di Ulma, served his apprenticeship in the art of glass painting, collaborating with this famous master. For example, in the chapel of the notaries at S. Petronio in Bologna their joint paintings, still preserved today, are distinguished by Italian drawing and by a German character in their colours; likewise those in the church of S. Giacomo at Soncino, executed between 1490 and 1500. T.'s artistic activity is documented at Milan (Duomo [1492], S. Maria della Grazie, S. Maria della Rosa, demolished in 1829), at Venice, and at Bologna (S. Petronio, S. Domenico). In 1517, at an advanced age, he was still working. In gratitude, T. also wrote the life of Bl. Giacomo, his master, which Silvestro di Prierio, Isidoro Isolani, and Giovanni Antonio Flaminio translated into Latin (cf. Acta SS. Octobris, V, Parigi-Roma 1868, pp. 793-803, where the Vita is given in the version of Fr. Isidoro da Milano).
