Isolani, Isidoro de

ISOLANI, ISIDORO de. - Dominican writer, b. in Milan probably between 1477 and 1480 and d. around the middle of 1528. He taught successively at Pavia (1513), Verona (1515), Milan (1517) and Cremona (1519). In 1521-22 he was a bachelor, and later regent at Bologna.

He was among the first Italian Dominicans to polemicize against Luther (Revocatio Martini Lutheri augustiniani ad S. Sedem, anonymous, Cremona 1519). He left various and esteemed works of philosophy (De immortalitate humani animi, Milan 1520), of hagiography and of theology. But his fame is linked above all to the Summa in quatuor partes divisa de donis s. Ioseph, sponsi Beatissimae V. M... (Pavia 1522, Avignon 1861, with French trans., Rome 1887), with which he placed himself in the vanguard of the spread of the cult of St. Joseph and fixed its theological foundations. With elegant language, copious doctrine and great piety, more than 60 gifts of the holy patriarch are enumerated and illustrated therein.
