ZEITSCHRIFT FÜR NEUTESTAMENTLICHE WISSENSCHAFT. - A periodical of New Testament studies founded by Erwin Preuschen (1867-1920) in 1900, under the title Zeitschrift für die neutest. Wissenschaft und die Kunde des Urchristentums.

For Preuschen, the investigation of the Urchristentum was the central problem of such studies, which were to be conducted according to philological and historical methods, with a little intuitive philosophy, but excluding tradition and canon (cf. Idee oder Methode, v. bibl.). Lietzmann (v.) changed the title to Z.f.n.W. und für die Kunde der älteren Kirche. Under him (from 1920 to 1941) the journal, open to every serious research, increased still further in esteem. From 1931 it took on as co-editor W. Eltester, who still currently directs it, assisted by M. Dibelius and G. Kittel (v.) in 1942, by W. Bauer and J. Jeremias from 1949. In the years 1943-48 the periodical was interrupted.

Published by the house of Töpelmann, first at Giessen and from 1913 at Berlin, the journal is accompanied by a series of "Beihefte"; it does not publish reviews.
