ZEITSCHRIFT FÜR NEUTESTAMENTLICHE WISSENSCHAFT. - A journal of New Testament studies founded by Erwin Preuschen (1867-1920) in 1900, under the title Zeitschrift für die neutest. Wissenschaft und die Kunde des Urchristentums.
For Preuschen, the investigation of Urchristentum was the central problem of such studies, which were to be pursued according to philological and historical methods, with a measure of intuitive philosophy, but excluding tradition and canon (cf. Idee oder Methode, V. BIBLICA.). LIETZMANN, HANS (v.) changed the title to Z.f.n.W. und für die Kunde der älteren Kirche. Under him (from 1920 to 1941), the journal, open to every serious line of research, gained still further esteem. In 1931 he took on W. Eltester as co-editor, who still directs it at present, assisted by M. Dibelius and G. Kittel (v.) in 1942, and by W. Bauer and J. Jeremias from 1949. During the years 1943-48 publication of the journal was suspended.
Published by the Töpelmann firm, first in Giessen and, from 1913, in Berlin, the journal is accompanied by a series of « Beihefte »; it does not publish reviews.
