In it, missionary science in its various manifestations—missionary theory, missionary law, missionary history, and missionography—was for the first time treated critically and systematically.
With the exception of a brief interruption, Schmidlin remained editor until 1937. In 1928 the programme was also extended to the comparative science of religions, under the editorship of J. P. Steffes; the title of the journal was changed to Zeitschrift für Missionswissenschaft und Religionswissenschaft. From 1938 the journal was published by Max Bierbaum and J. P. Steffes under the new title Missionswissenschaft und Religionswissenschaft. In 1942 publication was prohibited; it reappeared in 1947 and in 1950 resumed the title Zeitschrift für Missionswissenschaft und Religionswissenschaft. In 1953 dom Thomas Ohm, O. S. B., assumed the editorship of the journal.
