Zeitschrift Für Religions- Und Geistesgeschichte

ZEITSCHRIFT FÜR RELIGIONS-UND GEISTESGESCHICHTE. — Periodical founded in 1948 by H. J. Schoeps, who at that time became extraordinary professor in the « Seminar für Religions- und Geistesgeschichte » of Erlangen.

Among its various subjects, it also deals with Catholic matters, generally in a composed manner. The authors aim at strictly scientific work, drawing on the sources without allowing themselves to be diverted from the truth, and, free from every interest or tendency, seeking purely what is true.

It is human, nevertheless, that such impartiality should be difficult: this can be seen, for example, in an article on s. Paolo, the « misguided Jew », whose theology is defined as the « theology of misunderstanding »; in another, in which it is stated that s. Giacomo il Minore had been, from the imprisonment of s. Pietro onward, the « Christian caliph », etc. Yet the journal has also acquired merit by defending the truth against prejudices. It is currently published by the firm E. J. Brill, Leiden-Cologne.
