LIETZMANN, Hans. - Protestant theologian, b. 1875, d. 1942. Disciple of the classical philologists H. Usener and Fr. Bücheler. This provenance from philology determined Lietzmann’s interesting scientific method.

La-dicea und seine Schule* (I, Tübingen 1904); *Das Leben des hl. Symeon Stylites* (Leipzig 1908); *Petrus und Paulus in Rom* (Bonn 1915, 2nd ed., ibid. 1927); *Das Sacramentalium Gregorianum nach dem Aachener Urexemplar* (Münster 1920); *Symbolstudien* (in *Zeitschrift für neutestament. Wissenschaft*, 21 [1922]; 22 [1923]; 24 [1925] and 26 [1927]); *Messe und Herrenmahl* (Bonn 1926); *Ein Beitrag zur Mandierfrage* (Berlin 1930). In the same year, he published together with H. W. Beyer, *Die jüdische Katakombe der Villa Torlonia in Rom* (ibid. 1930); *Geschichte der alten Kirche* (4 vols., ibid. 1932–44); *Petrus, römischer Martyrer* (ibid. 1936). He was editor of the *Handbuch zum Neuen Testament*, where he published several commentaries, and directed the series: *Kleine Texte für theologische u. philosophische Vorlesungen u. Übungen* (Berlin and Bonn 1902 ff.).
L., professor at Berlin from 1924 and member of the Academy from 1927, was a keen-minded scholar; as a theologian of conservative tendency, he sought contact even with Catholic scholars.
