ZENSHU, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE of. - Situated in the central-western part of Korea, it covers an area of 8,554 sq. km., with a population of 2,200,000 inhabitants.
The history of the evangelization of this mission is connected with that of the apostolic vicariate of Taikou, from which it was detached on 13 April 1937 and entrusted to the Korean secular clergy. On 12 July 1950 it changed its former name of Z. to that of Chonju. According to the statistics of 1951-52, this jurisdiction has 21,701 catechumens. There are 25,800 Protestants. There are 24 priests, all Korean; 13 Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres; 3 major seminarians and 15 minor seminarians; 200 catechists; 2 doctors and 7 nurses; one hospital, one leprosarium; one middle school; one secondary school; 41 sacred buildings; 11 principal stations and 160 secondary ones.
