ZENSHU, APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. — Located in the central-western part of Korea, it covers an area of 8,554 sq. km. with a population of 2,200,000 inhabitants.
The history of the evangelization of this mission is based on that of the apostolic vicariate of Taikou, from which it was detached on April 13, 1937 and entrusted to the Korean secular clergy. On July 12, 1950, it changed its former name of Z. to that of Chonju. According to the statistics of 1951-52, this circumscription has 2,701 catechumens. Protestants number 25,800. There are 24 priests, all Korean; 13 Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres; 3 major and 15 minor seminaries; 200 catechists; 2 physicians and 7 nurses; one hospital, one leper colony; one middle school; one high school; 41 sacred buildings; 11 main stations and 160 secondary ones.
