ZENSHU [JEONJU], APOSTOLIC PREFECTURE OF. - Located in the central-western part of Korea, it covers an area of 8,554 sq km with a population of 2,200,000 inhabitants.

The history of the evangelization of this mission is bound up with that of the apostolic vicariate of Taikou, from which it was detached on 13 April 1937 and entrusted to the Korean secular clergy. On 12 July 1950 it changed its former name of Z. to that of Chonju. This circumscription, according to the statistics of 1951-52, has 21,701 catechumens. Protestants number 25,800. There are 24 priests, all Koreans; 13 Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres; 3 major and 15 minor seminarians; 200 catechists; 2 doctors and 7 nurses; a hospital, a leprosarium; a middle school; a high school; 41 sacred buildings; 11 principal stations and 160 secondary ones.
