ZUCCHINI, CARLO. - Italian deputy and Catholic organizer, b. at Faenza on 13 Apr. 1862, d. at Rocchetta di Vara (La Spezia) on 14 Nov. 1928.
In the '90s he began a singular activity in several branches of Catholic Action, founding, among other things, the Circolo della Giov. Cattolica of Faenza, which was the first in the diocese; the Società Operaia di mutuo soccorso; the Casa del popolo, which was the central headquarters of the Catholic associations. He cooperated in the founding of the Banca di credito romagnolo; and further, with Crispolti and Grosoli, in the founding of the daily L'avvenire d'Italia of Bologna. He also founded the weekly Il Piccolo, of a popular kind, which was the organ of Faenza Catholic Action. In the Opera dei Congressi he was a member of the Romagnol regional Committee and of the permanent general Committee. In Nov. 1903 he was effective president of the national Congress of Bologna, at which the innovating current of Christian democracy prevailed, under the guidance of Murri, in the directions of the movement. In 1915, on the designation of Toniolo, he was appointed general president of the Unione Economico-Sociale (v.).
Having entered political life with the Partito popolare, he was elected deputy for Ravenna in '19 for the 25th legislature, and for Bologna in '21 for the 26th. He also brought to the Chamber, and to the electoral meetings, with firmness of character, his inciting word and practical contributions; so that much was owed to him if in Faenza, and in other centers of Romagna, the subversive tide did not prevail.
