Bull applying the plenary indulgence of the Portiuncula to the souls in purgatory

Bull of Pope Innocent XI ·

CLXXVII.
It is granted that the plenary indulgence perpetual, conceded to the churches of the Order of St. Francis of the Observance and of the Reformed on the 2nd of August, may be applied by way of suffrage. Innocent, Pope XI, for perpetual remembrance of the matter.

1 § 1. By another [indulgence], of happy memory, our predecessor Pope Gregory XV granted to all and each of the faithful of either sex, truly penitent and confessed and refreshed by holy communion, who [perform the conditions]... This indulgence was granted by Gregory XV, const. ed. mdcxxii, on 5 July. Concerning other indulgences of this Order, see this Pontifical const. ed. mdclxxxvi, on 5 September, pontif. x, and Innocent XII const. ed. mdcxci, on 24 December, pontif. I.

2 from any of the churches of the friars of the Order of Friars Minor of St. Francis of the Observance and of the Reformed Friars Minor, existing everywhere, on the 2nd day of the month of August from the beginning of Vespers until the setting of the sun of that same day in each year devoutly visited, and there poured forth pious prayers to God for the concord of Christian princes, the extirpation of heresies, and the exaltation of holy Mother Church, he mercifully granted in the Lord a plenary indulgence and remission of all their sins, and otherwise as is more fully contained in the letters of that same Gregory our predecessor issued in similar form by Brief on the 4th of July mdcxxii concerning this matter, which he wished to be valid for all perpetual future times.

3 § 2. Since, however, as our beloved son, the present procurator general of the said Order, has recently set forth to us, he most earnestly desires that the plenary indulgence and remission of sins, recently conceded by the said Gregory our predecessor, may also be applied to the souls of deceased Christian faithful by way of suffrage: we, wishing to accede favorably, as far as we are able in the Lord, to the pious wishes of the same procurator general in this matter, relying upon the authority delivered and conceded to us by the Lord, do grant and indulge that the plenary indulgence and remission of sins conceded to the aforesaid Christian faithful visiting the aforesaid churches of the friars of the Order of St. Francis of the Observance and of the Reformed on the said 2nd day of the month of August, as above, and performing the aforesaid, may also be applied to the souls of Christian faithful who, joined to God in charity, have departed from this life, by way of suffrage, even perpetually. Notwithstanding anything whatsoever to the contrary.

4 § 3. We will, however, that to copies or exemplars of these same letters, even printed ones, subscribed by the hand of some public notary and sealed with the seal of a person constituted in ecclesiastical dignity, the same faith be accorded everywhere in all places as would be accorded to these presents themselves if they were exhibited or shown.

5 Given at Rome, at St. Mary Major, under the Fisherman's Ring, on the 22nd day of January mdclxxxvii, in the eleventh year of our pontificate.

6 Dated 22 January 1687, pontificate year xi.

CLXXVII.
