Bull uniting the hospitals of the Congregation of St. John of God into one body

Bull of Pope Sixtus V ·

LXIV.

1 The union of the hospitals of the congregation of John of God into one body, with certain ordinances. Sixtus, Pope V, for the memory of the matter in the future. Although for the duty of the pastoral office, to which divine Majesty has placed us, albeit unworthy, we cherish all the faithful with paternal love, especially those in religion, despising the pomp of this transitory age and laying up their treasures in heaven, we nevertheless direct them more readily in the ways of the Lord, who, like new plantations and tender shoots in the vineyard of the Lord, do indeed bring forth abundant and pleasing fruit to God and the first fruits useful to our neighbour, yet they have greater need of irrigation with the dew of holiness, so that, with roots striking deeper, they may grow more firmly. In this matter we also follow the example of the heavenly Father of the household, who, sending workers into his vineyard not only at the first hour and the third and sixth, but also at the ninth, tenth and eleventh hour, provided they are diligent and zealous, has bestowed the most abundant reward.

2 § 1. Indeed, some time ago our predecessor of happy memory, Pope Pius V, being informed through the then existing superior brother of the hospital called John of God in Granada, that in certain places then specified in Spain there were certain other hospitals of this kind, which were individually administered by one superior called a brother and for that reason by some other brothers, rendering obedience to that superior brother, accustomed to collect alms and offerings of charitable assistance from the Christian faithful for the benefit and relief of the poor and miserable persons, granted permission and faculty to the brothers then existing for the time being, even those who were priests individually in any hospital, to wear a certain habit then designated, by which they could more easily be recognized by others, and so that it would be permitted to them to collect alms and to continue the pious exercise of the hospital, provided they lived under the Rule of St. Augustine and under the obedience of the ordinary of that place in which the hospitals themselves were situated, and granted and ordained certain other things regarding the same brothers and their hospitals, as is more fully contained in the said letters.

3 § 2. And then, as was recently set forth to us, following their example and imitation from that time until the present day, many hospitals, to the number of twenty-two, have been erected and established not only in Spain, but also in Italy and perhaps in other provinces; the number of brothers also using the same name and habit has, with the blessing of the Lord, been greatly increased and grows more each day, not without great spiritual consolation to all the faithful in whose cities and places they are situated, and with the odour of good repute, and especially with aid to the poor sick of Christ who resort to them, who are received and cared for by them with a special charity ministering personally; and the same works incite other faithful, from whom the aforesaid brothers collect alms, to relieve the poor by such example and occasion not a little, just as also in this our beloved City, in the hospital of St. John Calibita in the Island, such pious works are seen to be exercised with great fruit.

4 § 3. Moreover, although the same brothers, though most of them living under the said Rule, do emit the three substantial vows and also a fourth concerning the aid of poor sick, yet they do not have a certain superior who presides generally over all hospitals and brothers, nor have they ever established constitutions or their own rule of living of their Order, and it is most fitting that those who are joined together by similarity of habit, name and pious exercise, should also be brought under one and the same head, not with dissimilar rite, as each one wishes, and almost with the proper custom of each hospital, but under the best and uniform discipline of regular observance, prescribed by common consent and unanimous spirit, to true unity acceptable to God and most consonant with religious persons.

5 § h. For this reason the confratres themselves, moved by a salutary desire, judged it to pertain greatly to the right institution and holy preservation of their Order, if, since they were not only in Spain but also in Italy, they had neither one superior nor the same Rule, they petitioned to be united together, and to convoke a general chapter at Rome, and in it to enact constitutions, in the manner of other duly instituted regular congregations, they themselves also should be reduced into one congregation, and their general chapter should be convoked now for the first time, then at appointed times, and in it some general superior of the whole Order should be chosen, and the congregation itself should be tempered and formed by its own institutions, and those the best. They designated for themselves on this first occasion the hospital itself of St. John Calybitae, in which they desire the general chapter to be convoked as soon as possible. For this place seems most opportune, in which the very beginnings, as it were, of that congregation may be more firmly established, and they may have readier counsels and assistance from this See, without which they can scarcely safely determine anything; and just as their Religion was first founded by the authority of the Roman Church itself, the common mother and teacher, so also by the patronage of that same See may it receive more prosperous increase day by day, and from the purest fountains of the apostolic Church may it draw, without any danger of offense, the discipline of regular observance.

2 § 1. Dudum siquidem felicis recordationis Pius Papa V, praedecessor noster, certior factus per tunc exislentem confratrem maiorem hospitalis Ioannis Dei nuncupati, Granatensis, in certis tunc expressis locis Hispaniarum esse nonnulla alia eiusmodi hospitalia, quae singula per unum maiorem nuncupatum et propterea aliquos alios confratres, eidem malori confratri obedientiam praestantes, eleemosynasque et oblata a christifìdelibus charitatis subsidia colligere solitos ad commodum et subventionem pauperum et miserabilium personarum, administrarentur; concessit licenliam et facultatem prò tempore existentibus confratribus, etiam iis, qui singuli in quolibet hospitali presbiteri forent, deferendi certum habitum tunc designatum, quo facilius a celeris internosci possent, utque eis liceret colligere eleemosynas et pium hospitalis exercitium continuare, dummodo degerent sub Regula Sancti Auguslini et sub obedientia ordinarii eius loci in quo hospitalia ipsa consisterei, aliaque nonnulla quoad eosdem confratres eorumque hospitalia indulsit et ordinavit, prout in dictis litteris latius continetur.

LXIV.
