Brief erecting the apostolic vicariates of Melanesia and Micronesia
He erects the apostolic vicariates of Melanesia and Micronesia, separating those regions from the vicariate of Western Oceania, defines the boundaries of each new vicariate, decrees that both are meanwhile to be governed by one Apostolic Vicar only, and entrusts the care of both to the Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lyons.
GREGORY PP. XVI.
for perpetual record of the matter.
1 From the duty of pastoral office we ought to have nothing more at heart than to care for those things to be accomplished which appear opportune for protecting and advancing the Catholic faith.
2 § 1. Now indeed after the year 1842, when we established a central vicariate in the western part of Oceania, we understood it to be most expedient for the good of Catholic matters that, with the small extent of missions preserved through division, and with the number of Bishops increased along with evangelical workers, we should institute new and distinct missions. Accordingly, when we recognized that in the still too extensive western mission there was room for new division to be accomplished, by means of a prior dismemberment of territories, as below, from the western vicariate we determined that two distinct vicariates should be instituted, of which one should embrace Melanesia and the other Micronesia.
3 GREGORY PP. XVI.
4 343 In the year 1844 we have instituted new and distinct missions. Wherefore, when we recognized that in the still too extensive western mission there was room for new division to be accomplished, by means of a prior dismemberment of territories, as below, from the western vicariate we determined that two distinct vicariates should be instituted, of which one should embrace Melanesia and the other Micronesia.
5 § 2. For which reason, by the counsel of our venerable brothers the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church presiding over the affairs of the Propagation of the Faith, by our own motion and mature deliberation, and from the fullness of apostolic power, we entirely divide and dismember from the western vicariate the territories and islands written below, and we erect and establish a new apostolic vicariate in Melanesia, which indeed is circumscribed on the east between degrees 125 and 160 of longitude, where the central mission has its origin, and to the south between the equinoctial line and degree 12 of latitude, and to it, besides other islands of lesser importance, we decree to belong the islands called New Guinea, Tobia, William, Shouten, Waigion, the two Vesset, Timollant, Arriou, Amirante, New Hanover, Hibernia and Britannia, Luixianda, Bougainville, Choiseul, Isabella, Guadalcanal, Christovald. To Micronesia, however, in which we erect and establish another apostolic vicariate, the boundaries of which shall be to the east degree 125, to the west degree 180 of longitude, to the north degree 13 of latitude, and to the south the equinoctial circle, we will and decree that there belong, besides other islands of inferior rank, the entire Archipelagos of the Carolines, Marshall and Gilbert.
6 § 3. Furthermore we will and decree that each mission or vicariate for now be governed by one and the same Apostolic Vicar, until such time as opportunity shall arise to select another Prelate for the other vicariate.
7 § 4. The care moreover of this twofold joined vicariate, for now, until otherwise it be determined for one or the other of them, we will to be commended to the meritorious society of priests of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom the central and western missions have already been entrusted, and from these same priests the Apostolic Vicar is to be chosen, which we will and decree.
8 § 5. Decreeing these letters to be firm, valid and effective and to be and to obtain their full and complete effects, etc.
9 Given at Rome at St. Mary Major under the Fisherman's Ring, on 19 July in the year 1844, in the fourteenth year of our pontificate.
