Constitution on the censorship of books

Constitution of Pope Alexander VI ·

Pope Alexander VI institutes book censorship and orders the destruction of bad books.

1 Alexander, etc. For perpetual remembrance of the matter. Among the manifold cares of our solicitude, we ought to undertake with special diligence, according to our pastoral office, that those things which are salutary and praiseworthy and consonant with the Catholic faith and conformable to good morals, arising in our time, should not only be preserved and increased, but also be propagated to posterity, and that those things which are vicious, damnable, and impious should be cut down and rooted out entirely and permitted to sprout nowhere, allowing in the field of the Lord and the Vineyard of the Lord of Hosts only those things to be sown by which the minds of the faithful may be spiritually nourished, the tares being eradicated and the barren wild olive cut down. Considering therefore that just as it is known to benefit the human race greatly that those things which pertain to the good arts and approved morals should be divulged and brought to light and to the knowledge of men both present and those who are to come, which is especially wont to happen through the benefit of letters by which truth itself, as it were bound, is brought, preserved, and propagated for the use of the absent and of future generations, so it must be deemed pernicious and most hostile to the same human race if those things which are harmful and found to be adverse to sound doctrines and honest morals and especially to orthodox religion should be published and extended to the knowledge of many through the ministry of letters, for just as good, the more universal it is, the more useful, divine, and great it is, so also evil, the more widely and abundantly it spreads, the worse and more abominable it ought to be considered, especially because the thoughts of human frailty are found to be more prone to evil than to good. Hence it is that just as the art of printing letters is held to be most useful for the easier multiplication of approved and useful works, so it would be most harmful if the artificers of that art should perversely use that art by indiscriminately printing things which are pernicious; the printers themselves therefore ought rightly to be restrained by appropriate remedies so that they desist from the printing of those things which are known to be contrary to the Catholic faith or adverse to it, or which can plausibly generate scandal in the minds of the faithful. Whence we, who hold the place of Him on earth who descended from heaven to illuminate the minds of men and to exterminate the darkness of errors, having learned through faithful report that by the artifice of the said art many books and treatises have been printed in various parts of the world, especially in the provinces of Cologne, Mainz, Trier, and Magdeburg, containing in themselves various errors and pernicious dogmas even hostile to the sacred Christian religion, and are daily being printed indiscriminately, wishing to meet such a detestable plague without further delay, as we are bound to do by the pastoral office committed to us, to all and each of the artificers of the said art and those assisting them in any way and exercising themselves in any manner about their art of printing, dwelling in the aforesaid provinces, under the penalty of excommunication latae sententiae, which they shall incur ipso facto if they act contrary to this, and a pecuniary penalty to be imposed and exacted at the discretion of the venerable brothers the archbishops or their vicars general in spiritual matters or officials, each of them namely in his province, and to be applied to the Apostolic Camera, by the authority of the present apostolic letter we strictly forbid that henceforth they presume in any way to print or cause to be printed any books, treatises, or writings whatsoever, unless they have first consulted on this matter with the aforesaid archbishops or vicars or officials, and have obtained their special and express permission to be granted freely, whose consciences we burden so that before they grant such permission, they diligently examine the things to be printed or cause them to be examined by learned and Catholic examiners, and they take care and diligently see to it that nothing be printed which is contrary to orthodox faith, impious, and scandalous. And because it would be of little avail to provide against future printings unless those which are known to be erroneous, impious, and scandalous should be suppressed, we command the same archbishops, vicars, and officials by the aforesaid authority that each of them in the said province of his, admonish and require by our authority all and each of the printers and other persons of whatsoever dignity, status, degree, order, condition, and preeminence they may be, that all and each of the inventories of books and treatises of whatsoever kind printed, and the books and treatises printed in which by the aforesaid archbishops or vicars or officials or any one of them anything is judged or declared to be contained contrary to the Catholic faith, impious, adverse, and scandalous or of ill sound, all fraud and deceit ceasing, within a term to be fixed at their discretion, they consign and present before them respectively, under the like penalty of excommunication latae sententiae and a pecuniary penalty to be exacted at their discretion, as aforesaid, to be incurred; and let them take care that the books thus printed, and also in other ways as they shall judge expedient, be brought to them and, when brought, be burned; and let them forbid by our authority under like censures and penalties that anyone presume to read or keep them; nor let them omit to inquire diligently by whose procurement such books were printed, and for what reason they procured this to the detriment of the Catholic faith (which they profess), and whether the procurers themselves are suspected of any heresy. Restraining any contradictors and rebels whatsoever, even of whatsoever dignity, status, degree, order, and condition, as well as any communities, universities, and colleges whatsoever, by sentences of excommunication, suspension, and interdict and other ecclesiastical sentences, censures, and penalties, with their aggravation and reaggravation, appeal being set aside, invoking also to this end, if need be, the aid of the secular arm, to which, so that it may more diligently render assistance, we apply one half of the said pecuniary penalty which it shall have exacted.

2 Notwithstanding the constitutions...

3 And because it would be difficult to carry these present letters to individual places...... We exhort moreover those same archbishops and vicars and officials that, keeping before their eyes the zeal of faith and the salvation of souls, in the aforesaid matters they strive to show themselves so diligent and careful, that from God there may come to them the reward of eternal life and from us a worthy expression of gratitude. To no one, therefore, etc. If anyone, etc. Given at Rome at St. Peter's in the year, etc., in the year of our Lord fifteen hundred and one, on the first day of June, in the ninth year of our pontificate.

1 "Alexander etc.

A nessuno dunque ecc. Se qualcuno ecc. Dato a Roma presso San Pietro nell'anno ecc.
