Romanus Pontifex

Bull on the restoration of the diocese of Miranda

Bull of Pope Pius VI ·

of the use of the mozzetta, the faculty of making statutes, and the reservation of the right of nomination to the said eleven canonries in favor of the most faithful Queen and her successors, Kings of Portugal.
Pius, Bishop, Servant of the servants of God. "To the perpetual memory of the matter."

1 § 1. The Roman Pontiff, constituted by divine authority over the care and inspection of the Lord's field throughout the whole world, so that according to that prophetic word, for the variety of things and times, he may now pluck up the seeds that have sprung up, and plant; sometimes destroy buildings that were erected long ago, or otherwise transfer them, or build them again anew, when the ingenious solicitude of persons shining with royal power, and again regarding the increase of the Catholic religion and the salvation of souls, brings the reasons to the Apostolic See as to the font of graces, through which certain episcopal churches, erected elsewhere as it were as new tents of faith and bulwarks for the sake of temporal straits or climate, or region, or some other sufficiently proven inconvenience to the pastor, ought to be transferred to other churches, which had formerly originated from them, whenever he knows that the good of religion itself requires it; he strives to provide for any inconvenience through the ministry of suppression entrusted to him from heaven, and arranges other things for the honor of divine worship, as the pious wishes of such persons demand, and as he himself perceives to be expedient in the Lord.

2 § 2. Since therefore, as from the representation of our most beloved daughter in Christ Maria Francisca, Queen of Portugal and the Algarves, most faithful, made to us through our beloved son Henry of Menezes, her plenipotentiary minister with us and the Apostolic See, we have recently received that our predecessor of happy memory, Pope Paul III, yielding to the prayers of the illustrious memory of John III, then King of Portugal and the Algarves, while he lived, which were presented to that same Paul our predecessor, in the year of our Lord one thousand five hundred and forty-five, did by apostolic authority perpetually separate and dismember a certain portion of that diocese from the archbishopric of Braga. And from that thus separated and dismembered portion, so that a new bishopric might be formed, the aforesaid parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the town of Miranda, then decorated with the title and honor of a city, after the prior suppression and extinction of that titular church, did by the same apostolic authority perpetually erect and institute in the cathedral church of Miranda, and in it the seat and episcopal dignity for one Bishop of Miranda.

3 § 3. And, as we have likewise received, since the aforesaid city of Miranda, in which the episcopal seat thus erected and instituted has been so constituted, although it were built in a more elevated place and enjoys the purest air, nevertheless it is found to be situated in the extreme part of the whole diocese of Miranda; experience has made it known from this that the inconveniences, which gave cause to that same dismemberment from the aforesaid archbishopric of Braga, as is stated, have not been sufficiently remedied, for the reason that, since the aforesaid diocese of Miranda extends to twenty-two leagues, which make up about seventy Italian miles; and yet the episcopal seat of this kind is situated in a corner, or in the extreme part of the same diocese of Miranda, as is stated, to exist; this was therefore inconvenient both to the Bishop of Miranda and also to his diocesans, namely because it was not without difficulty that the said bishop could be approached when necessity required.
