Grave nimis

SIXTUS IV.

1 1) We bear with great seriousness and distress the unfavorable reports that reach us concerning certain ecclesiastical persons. But we are provoked all the more gravely by the excesses committed in preaching by those who have been appointed to evangelize the word of God, inasmuch as those who remain uncorrected are in greater peril; for errors which are thus publicly impressed upon the hearts of many through preaching cannot easily be erased. Indeed, since the holy Roman Church solemnly celebrates the feast of the immaculate and ever-virgin Mary's conception in public, and has ordained a special and proper office concerning this matter: certain preachers of diverse orders, as we have learned, have not blushed to affirm publicly in their sermons to the people throughout various cities and lands, and do not cease to preach daily, that all those who hold or assert that the same glorious and immaculate Mother of God was conceived without the stain of original sin are committing mortal sin or are heretics; that those celebrating the office of the same immaculate conception and hearing the sermons of those who affirm that she was conceived without such a stain are sinning gravely: and not content with the aforesaid preaching, they have published books composed upon these their assertions, from whose assertions and preachings no light scandals have arisen in the minds of the faithful, and greater ones are justly feared to arise daily. We therefore, wishing to oppose such rash presumptions and perverse assertions and scandals which might arise therefrom in God's Church, as far as is granted to us from on high, by our own motion, not at the instance of any petition offered to us on this matter, but from our mere deliberation and certain knowledge, do hereby reprobate and condemn as false and erroneous and wholly alien from the truth the aforesaid assertions of the same preachers and of any others whatsoever who might presume to affirm that those who believed or held that the same Mother of God was preserved from the stain of original sin in her conception are therefore polluted by the taint of some heresy or are committing mortal sin; or that those celebrating such an office of the conception or hearing such sermons incur the guilt of some sin, and likewise the aforesaid books published concerning this matter, by apostolic authority in the tenor of these presents: and by the same motion, knowledge, and authority we establish and ordain that preachers of the word of God and any others whatsoever, of whatever status, rank, order, or condition they may be, who henceforth shall presume with rash audacity to affirm in their sermons to the people or in any other manner that such assertions disapproved and condemned by us are true, or to read, hold, or possess the said books as true, after they have become aware of these presents, shall incur the sentence of excommunication by that very fact, from which they cannot obtain the benefit of absolution from any other than the Roman Pontiff (except at the point of death). Likewise by the same motion, knowledge, and authority, subjecting to a like penalty and censure those who shall have dared to assert that those holding the contrary opinion, namely that the glorious Virgin Mary was conceived with original sin, incur the crime of heresy or mortal sin, since it has not yet been decided by the Roman Church and the apostolic see: notwithstanding any apostolic constitutions and ordinances to the contrary whatsoever, by which it may commonly or individually have been granted from the apostolic see that they cannot be interdicted, suspended, or excommunicated through apostolic letters not making full and express mention, word for word, of such an indult. And lest they be able at any time to allege ignorance of the foregoing, we will that the ordinaries of places, when requested, cause these letters to be published in the churches situated in their cities and in the notable places of their dioceses, during sermons to the people when a greater multitude of the people shall have gathered for divine worship. Furthermore, because it would be difficult to carry these letters to each place where it would be expedient; we also will, and by the said authority decree, that a copy of the same letters, made by the hand of a public notary and furnished with the authentic seal of some ecclesiastical prelate, shall be accepted everywhere just as these original letters themselves would be accepted if they were exhibited or shown. Let no one whatsoever be permitted to infringe this page of our reprobation, condemnation, statute, ordinance, will, and decree, or to presume to act contrary to it with rash audacity. If anyone, however, shall presume to attempt this, let him know that he will incur the indignation of almighty God and of the blessed Peter and Paul, his apostles. Given at Rome at St. Peter's in the year of our Lord's incarnation 1483, on the day before the nones of July, in the thirteenth year of our pontificate.1
