Orientis Catholici

2 I. Institutum studiis rerum orientalium provehendis Romae esto, quod, praecipua sub vigilantia curaque Summi Pontificis positum, pontificii titulo decoretur.
3 II.
4 III. Propria distinctaque sedes Instituto erit in iis prope Vaticanum aedibus, ubi « Hospitium de Convertendis » vulgo dictum, usque adhuc fuit: id quod fieri volumus sine ullo detrimento ipsius Hospitii.
5 IV. Hae in Instituto tradantur disciplinae:
7 b) Ius canonicum omnium Orientis christianarum gentium
8 c) Multiplex Orientalium Liturgia
10 e) Litterae sermonesque Orientalium.
11 V. Horum omnium studiorum cursus biennio conficiatur.
12 VI.
13 VII.

MOTU PROPRIO
DEI PROVIDENTIS
CONCERNING THE PONTIFICAL INSTITUTE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF ORIENTAL STUDIES.
1 For the purpose of stirring up the Catholic East to hope for its former prosperity, in the month of May of the current year We established the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Church. But what We have proposed will certainly come to pass more easily and abundantly if those who are to labor with Us in pursuing it shall have come well prepared and equipped for work. Accordingly, We have decreed to establish in this City, the head of Christendom, a proper home for higher studies in Oriental matters, one that is adorned with all the apparatus which the learning of this age demands, and distinguished by teachers most expert in each field and devoted to Oriental studies: in which indeed Latin priests who wish to exercise the sacred ministry among the Orientals shall first be formed by suitable instruction, which shall have all the necessary elements. Moreover, this house of studies shall be open also to Orientals both united and those called orthodox: to the former so that they may perfect the ordinary curriculum of doctrine by the addition of these disciplines; to the latter so that they may be able, laying aside all prejudiced opinion, to search out the truth thoroughly. For We wish that the exposition of Catholic doctrine and likewise of Orthodox doctrine proceed together equally there, so that it may be evident to any man of sound judgment from what sources each has flowed, whether from the preaching of the Apostles, transmitted to us through the perpetual magisterium of the Church, or from elsewhere. Therefore, that this may turn out well for Christian affairs in the East, We by this Motu Proprio constitute and ordain:
2 I. Let there be an Institute at Rome for the advancement of Oriental studies, which, placed under the principal vigilance and care of the Supreme Pontiff, shall be decorated with the pontifical title.
3 II. It shall be directly subject to the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Church, through which it shall be answerable to Us and to Our successors.
4 III. The Institute shall have its own distinct seat in those buildings near the Vatican where the « Hospitium de Convertendis » was commonly called, up to now: which We wish to be done without any detriment to the Hospice itself.
5 IV. These disciplines shall be taught in the Institute:
6 a) Orthodox theology which touches upon the various doctrines of Oriental Christians concerning divine matters, with lectures on Oriental Patrology, on Historical Theology and on Patristics
7 b) Canon law of all Oriental Christian peoples
8 c) The manifold Liturgy of the Orientals
9 d) The History of Byzantium and the rest of the East, both sacred and civil: to which shall be added lectures on Ethnographic Geography, on Sacred Archaeology, on the Civil and Political Constitution of those peoples
10 e) The Letters and Languages of the Orientals.
11 V. The course of all these studies shall be completed in two years.
12 VI. The schools of the Institute shall be attended by priests of the Latin rite who are about to exercise the sacred ministry in the East: it shall be permitted to attend the same schools not only by our Oriental clerics, but also by those Orthodox who are desirous of inquiring more deeply into the truth.
13 VII. But lest anything be lacking in aid to the studies there, We attach to the Institute a well-equipped Library both with a select abundance of books and with periodical writings which pertain to the matter.
14 Moreover, We command that those things which are here constituted by Us shall be valid in perpetuity, any contrary provisions whatsoever, even those worthy of most special mention, notwithstanding.
15 Given at Rome at St. Peter's, on the 15th day of the month of October in the year 1917, in the fourth year of Our Pontificate.
