ABRAHAM I ALBATHANTZI. - Armenian Katholikos, from 607 to 610-11. He ascended the patriarchal throne, which had already been vacant for three years, during which Verthanes had directed it; the latter's obstinacy in accusing Kurion, Katholikos of the Iberians, of favoring the Nestorian heresy and of adhering to the Chalcedonian formula, was taken up again by A. and led finally to the separation of the Iberians. A., in fact, after sending three letters of protest to Kurion, in the last of which he clearly took a position against the Council of Chalcedon, excommunicated Kurion, who had remained firm in his orthodox position.
