D'AFFLITTO, EUSTACHIO. - Of the dukes of Roccagloriosa, in whom the family of George Castriota, known as Scanderbeg, died out; born in Roccagloriosa, province of Salerno, in 1742 and died in Naples in 1785. He would have liked to become a Jesuit, a confrere of his first teachers: he nevertheless became a priest and then entered the Dominican order.
He taught philosophy in Naples in the convent of St. Dominic, and ecclesiastical history at the University; and the esteem he managed to win earned him membership in the Academy of Sciences and Letters and the directorship of the Royal Library and Museum of Capodimonte. He was a highly cultured and highly erudite man, especially versed in the literary history of his country, to which he planned to give the biographies of its writers; but he was able to publish only the first volume, which covered the writers from Abate to Azzolini (Memorie degli scrittori del regno di Napoli, Naples 1782), having been struck down by premature death.
