AUGUSTINIAN RECOLLECTS. - In the 16th century, while among the Augustinians of Spain that reform was beginning which gave rise to the Order of the Recollects (v.) of St. Augustine, the Augustinian nuns likewise felt the need for a more austere and rigorous life. The first monastery of the R. was the one founded in Madrid in 1589 by Blessed Alfonso of Orozco. An active supporter of the reform was also Blessed John de Ribera, archbishop of Valencia, who opened at Alcoy, in 1597, a monastery for the a. of stricter observance. Another and more energetic propagator of the reform was the ven. Marianna of St. Joseph, who, with the help of Fr. Antollinez, laid solid foundations of a more restricted life in the monastery of Eibar. From these three centers the R. soon spread throughout all of Spain, and today their houses number about 40. They depend on the local bishops.
