AGUCCHI, GIROLAMO. - Cardinal, brother of the preceding, b. in 1554, d. in Rome on 17 April 1605. In the service of his uncle, Cardinal Filippo Sega, he followed him to France and collaborated actively with him in the negotiations conducted by the latter on behalf of Pope Clement VIII, in order to support, together with the interests of the League, those of the Catholic religion. Having returned to Rome in 1594, he was there auditor and referendary of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, then held the preceptory of S. Spirito in Sassia, and was finally, on 9 June 1604, elevated to the purple, with the title of S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he is buried. He was an active collaborator, especially in the affairs of France, of Pope Leo XI, but he was not his Secretary of State, as is maintained by some.
