AGUCCHI, GIROLAMO. — Cardinal, brother of the preceding, b. in 1554, d. in Rome on 17 Apr. 1605. In the service of his uncle, Cardinal Filippo Sega, he accompanied him to France and actively collaborated with him in the negotiations conducted by the latter on behalf of Pope Clement VIII, with the aim of upholding, in the interests of the League, those of the Catholic religion. Returning to Rome in 1594, he served there as auditor and referendary to Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, then became preceptor of S. Spirito in Sassia, and was finally elevated to the purple on 9 June 1604, with the title of S. Pietro in Vincoli, where he is buried. He was an active collaborator, especially in French affairs, of Pope Leo XI, but was not his Secretary of State, as some have maintained.
