AGUCCHI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. — Apostolic nuncio. Born on 20 Nov. 1570 into a Bolognese family, died in 1632 at Motta di Livenza. He served as secretary to his uncle, Cardinal Filippo Sega, during the latter’s legation in France. Later he accompanied Cardinal Aldobrandini on his embassy for the Treaty of Lyon and the marriage of Henry IV (1600–1601), and subsequently served in Ravenna and Rome at the cardinal’s side until 1615. As private secretary to Pope Gregory XV, he was appointed by Urban VIII as nuncio to Venice, where he remained for eight years until his death. A historian, scholar, and mathematician, he wrote works in these fields, some of which remain unpublished.
