AMULIO, MARCANTONIO. - Cardinal, of the noble Venetian family da Mula, b. in 1505, d. in Rome on 13 March 1570. Podestà of Venice in 1529 and then ambassador of the Republic to various courts of Europe, he was appointed by Pius IV, to whom he was accredited in Rome, bishop of Verona and then in 1561 created cardinal, with the title of St. Marcellus. The Republic, which did not permit one of its agents to accept offices conferred by the powers to which they were accredited, gave him ostracism. The Pope, by way of compensation, appreciating his high gifts of learning and humanity, entrusted him with the direction of the Vatican Library and the supervision of the antiquities of the city of Rome. Finally, on 15 June 1564, he charged him with collecting the political and administrative documents concerning the history and the rights of the Roman diocese. He died in the discharge of this office.
