ANTIMO, VESCOVO DI NICOMEDIA

ANTIMUS, Bishop of Nicomedia. - Prelate of that city in Bithynia, martyred at the beginning of the 4th century (3 Sept. 302?) during the persecution of Diocletian. His feast is celebrated on 27 April. A fragment of a work De sancta ecclesia by him is preserved, in which are illustrated the characteristics that define the true Church in the face of heretical sects: unity, catholicity, apostolicity. The fragment is in all likelihood interpolated, since in it are named persons (Asterius the Sophist and Eusebius of Caesarea) later than A. It is not said, however, that the inauthenticity of this passage supports that of the rest of the work, which is unknown to us.
