ANTIMUS, bishop of TIANA. — A contemporary of St BASIL (4th century) and for a time also his friend, he soon became his antagonist when, after the division of the province of Cappadocia and the elevation of Tyana to the capital of the Second Division, A. insisted that ecclesiastical jurisdiction should follow the civil division, began to claim metropolitan rights over several suffragan bishops of St Basil, and even resorted to coercive measures against the recalcitrants.
