AIAS. - Galatian adventurer, first Catholic, then Arian. Hydatius calls him senior arrianus, an expression interpreted variously by historians. A priest or bishop according to some, a man of authority among the Arians according to others, A. has gone down in history as the Arian apostle of the Suebi of Galicia (Spain). In 465 he succeeded in drawing to Arianism the Catholic king Rechimund, who had received from Theodoric II, king of the Visigoths, military aid to conquer the throne and a bride. The people followed the king into heresy and remained faithful to it for nearly a century.
