ADALBERTO III, archbishop of SALISBURGO. — Son of Ladislao, duke of Bohemia, he died in 1200. When he was elected archbishop, he was still a deacon; he therefore had himself ordained and consecrated by Ulrico d'Aquileia (15 or 16 March 1169). Because he had not requested investiture, he had lengthy disputes with the emperor. Pope Alessandro III annulled A.’s deposition decreed by the Diet of Ratisbona in 1174, then summoned him before his tribunal and, after examining the case, compelled him to resign (1177). After his successor Corrado di Wittelsbach had been transferred to Magonza, A. was reelected on 19 September 1183; the emperor approved him, and he was not disturbed. Celestino III appointed him apostolic legate for his province.
