ADALBERTO III, archbishop of SALISBURG. - Son of Ladislaus, duke of Bohemia, d. in 1200. When elected archbishop he was still a deacon, so he had himself ordained and consecrated by Ulrich of Aquileia (15 or 16 March 1169). Because he had not sought investiture, he became embroiled in long disputes with the emperor. Pope Alexander III annulled Adalberto’s deposition decreed by the Diet of Regensburg in 1174, then summoned him to his tribunal; after examining the case, the pope compelled Adalberto to resign (1177). After transferring his successor Conrad of Wittelsbach to Mainz, Adalberto was reelected on 19 September 1183; the emperor approved him and he was no longer troubled. Celestine III appointed him apostolic legate for his province.
